Local Parkinson’s Care, Training, Support, and Polk County's First Optimism Walk

At Senior Helpers of Polk County, we are proud to walk alongside individuals and families living with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Through monthly support groups, caregiver training, community partnerships, and the upcoming Optimism Walk, we are building hope, connection, and strength across our community. Together, we’re taking meaningful steps toward a brighter future for Parkinson’s care in Polk County.

Here are four ways we continue to support the Parkinson’s community:

1. Monthly Parkinson’s Support Group in Lakeland

Each month (except December), Senior Helpers hosts a Parkinson’s Support Group on the second Wednesday from 1:00–2:00 p.m. at our Lakeland office, located at 2515 Troy Avenue.

The group is open to anyone with a Parkinson’s diagnosis as well as family caregivers. It is facilitated by Ginny Wolfe, MBA, Dementia and Parkinson’s Care Educator, who has led this group in Lakeland since 2009 and has facilitated caregiver training with Senior Helpers since 2017. Ginny brings decades of expertise and a compassionate approach to help families share experiences, learn caregiving strategies, and connect with others who truly understand the Parkinson’s journey.

2. Parkinson’s Care Training for Caregivers and the Community

Education is one of the most powerful tools in navigating Parkinson’s. At Senior Helpers, we provide Parkinson’s Care Training twice a month for our new caregivers—and we also open these classes to the public at no cost.

This two-hour introductory class helps participants better understand both motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s while offering practical tips for caregiver support. It is part of our commitment to delivering high-quality in-home care from trained professionals who are equipped to meet the unique needs of clients with Parkinson’s.

To learn about upcoming class dates or to register, call 863-686-7333.

3. Partnership with PunchWorX Rock Steady Boxing

Exercise plays a vital role in living well with Parkinson’s, and we are proud to partner with PunchWorX, a local Rock Steady Boxing affiliate that empowers participants through non-contact boxing-inspired fitness. Classes are held at Kelly Recreation Complex in Lakeland and are tailored specifically for those with Parkinson’s disease.

This innovative program improves strength, balance, agility, and confidence while building camaraderie among participants. To learn more, visit punchworx.org or call 863-219-7660.

4. Polk County’s First Optimism Walk for Parkinson’s Awareness

Senior Helpers is are thrilled to sponsor and support Polk County’s first-ever Optimism Walk for Parkinson’s Awareness, scheduled for Sunday, November 16 at Lake Crago Recreational Center in Lakeland.

Walk check-in and pre-event activities begin at 10:00 a.m. This important community event will raise funds to benefit the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA) while bringing people together to raise awareness, encourage optimism, and inspire hope.
