Senior Veterans with PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder, often shortened to PTSD, is often associated with younger individuals with recent traumatic experiences. However, the truth is that PTSD can affect individuals of any age at any time, including seniors. This is especially true for senior citizens with military experience serving in combat in their youth. As older adults journey through the complex process of aging, past traumas can resurface, which has the potential to significantly affect their physical and mental well-being.
PTSD is a mental health condition that is triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. Symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable or intrusive thoughts about the event. Women are statistically more likely to experience PTSD, with around nine million individuals afflicted with it. For adults aged 65 and up, between 70% and 90% have been exposed to at least one traumatic event during their lifetime, with about 4% of seniors suffering from PTSD.
Past traumas from early in life, like combat service, assaults, accidents, or natural disasters, can all linger and cause problems later in life. For elderly veterans, up to 30% are afflicted with PTSD, and sadly, PTSD symptoms can increase with age. Additionally, the effects of PTSD in seniors are different from the effects in younger people. Older adults may show withdrawal or avoidance behaviors, which can worsen loneliness and isolation. In turn, this may exacerbate a decline in physical health.
Treatment for PTSD depends on the individual and the symptoms. Psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of the two may be necessary, depending on the judgement of the treatment of medical professional.
