Nutrition and Senior Longevity

We all undoubtedly know that what we eat has a direct effect on our health. By choosing the right amounts of healthy foods to eat, we help our bodies and minds to function better, and for longer. But as we age, we must understand how our nutritional needs change.

While science has yet to discover any kind of Fountain of Youth, or a superfood that will allow us to live forever, it is important to note that living forever is not the goal of healthy aging. Rather, it is instead about maximizing the quality of our lives for as long as possible, something that could better be called “purposeful longevity”.

Our metabolisms slow as we get older, meaning daily living is supported by needing fewer calories overall. But even though we don’t need to consume as many calories, seniors, especially women, tend to require higher intake of calcium and some certain vitamins, as with aging comes a reduced ability for our bodies to absorb them.

Broadly, nutritious foods help to keep us well-fueled. But what is appropriately nutritious varies from person to person depending on their needs. If you have arthritis, for example, avoiding acidic foods will help to not aggravate the disease. Many dietary needs are imposed by chronic health conditions, which can be frustrating, but it can be better to frame it as needing to modify diet, not restrict it.

There is a tendency to sometimes think of food as medication, that x amounts of vitamin y or nutrient z will be required for certain conditions. But food is ultimately fuel, and regular eating patterns of the right foods are important to maintain energy levels.

Proper nutrition plays a key role in supporting seniors’ longevity and quality of life. At Senior Helpers of Gilbert & Chandler, we understand the unique dietary needs of older adults and are here to help with customized meal planning and preparation.
